Interestingly, in Bezique the trick taking precedes melding. The game is scored based on melds and trick taking, the former of which have similarities to those melds of pinochle, including marriages and doubles. The differences between Pinochle's ancient ancestor become fewer from this point. The tens from each suit had greater value than all other cards except the Ace. Once a popular pastime of America's Jewish and Irish immigrant population, the modern version of Pinochle, often referred to as Auction Pinochle due to its bidding element, is an integration of the French Bezique and a German game called Skat.Ä«ezique used a 64-card deck using two sevens, eights, nines, tens, Jacks, Queens, Kings and Aces from each suit. It emerged in America in the 20th century through immigrants from Germany, and became known as Pinochle due to the combination of the German accent and the French word Binochle, which is believed to have referred to Bezique or a game very similar to it. Pinochle is a twice-removed variation of a French game called Bezique made popular in the 19th century. A total of 1500 points wins the game, and those points are primarily earned through five possible melds (Around, Marriage, Run, Dix and Pinochle), many of which can be doubled due to the game's unique combined deck (for example a Double Run). In Pinochle, a deck of 48 cards is created using two of the nine, ten, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of each suit. For example, if the non-trump lead has already been trumped, and you have cards in the suit led, you cannot beat the trump that is currently winning the trick (since you have to follow suit), so you may play any card of the suit that was led.Pinochle is categorized as a trick taking game, though melding is a significant part of the game's point structure. If you are unable to do this you may play any card, subject always to the necessity to follow suit and to play a trump if you have no card of the suit led. The obligation to play higher only applies if you are able to beat the card that is currently winning the trick. The only case in which you are allowed to throw a card of a non-trump suit different from the led suit is when you have no cards of the suit led and no trumps. If you have no card of the suit led, you must play a trump if you can, even if someone before you has already played a higher trump than yours. The rule obliging you to beat the card currently winning the trick applies even if the card you are obliged to beat is your partner's.The first played of two identical cards beats the second.A common variation is to play cutthroat, where such passing of cards does not take place. The bidder incorporates those into the hand, then passes the same number of cards back. Racehorse means that, after the winning bidder has named trump, that player's partner passes cards across the table. One variation is that trump is determined by the final card dealt from the deck. The player winning the bid gets the right to name trump, but also has the responsibility to make sure the team earns the number of points bid.
